Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are used to reduce wrinkles and to brighten the skin. Alpha hydroxy acids are commonly found in different concentrations in many products. The most commonly used alpha hydroxy acids are glycolic acid, lactic acid, malic acid, citric acid and tartaric acid, respectively.

These mild acids remove the outer layer of dull skin and leave the skin with a rejuvenated appearance. Some of these acids are derived from fruit sources, for example, citrus fruits (citric acid), apples (malic acid) and grapes (tartaric acid).

Some of the alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, are found in sugar cane. Others, such as lactic acid, are found in milk.
